


Azurite is a natural basic copper carbonate occurring in the oxidation zones of copper deposits, typically alongside malachite, its green copper carbonate counterpart. The two minerals are frequently found together, and cross-contamination is common, often imparting a greenish cast to azurite pigment. Major historical sources included mines in Hungary, Saxony, and Tyrol, from which the pigment derived its common names: azzurro d’Alemagna (German blue), azzurro della Magna, or simply Mountain Blue.
Known since antiquity, azurite forms deep blue crystals that lighten to grayish blue when finely ground. Treatises consistently warn against grinding it too finely, as excessive milling destroys the crystalline structure and causes a progressive loss of color intensity. Traditional wet processing involved grinding and repeated washing with lye, yielding grades from dark blue to pale azure, with the greenish tinge often due to the presence of malachite.
From the 15th to 17th centuries azurite was the most common blue in European painting. In manuscript production it was widely used for rubrication and illumination, applied alongside cinnabar to mark capitals, titles, and decorative initials. In panel painting it was frequently used in tempera and often served as an underpaint for the more precious ultramarine. In wall painting it was very often applied a secco, on a dry wall, typically over a dark red underpaint executed in true fresco. Today in most cases the red underpaint remains visible, while the azurite layer is completely or mostly lost due to detachment.
In humid conditions on a wall, azurite can also slowly convert back to malachite, a transformation facilitated by their close chemical relationship: both are basic copper carbonates, differing only in the ratio of carbonate to copper. Azurite (2CuCO₃·Cu(OH)₂) contains two carbonate groups per formula unit, while malachite (CuCO₃·Cu(OH)₂) contains one. The loss of a single CO₂ molecule is sufficient to drive the conversion. This phenomenon explains the green discoloration visible in many medieval frescoes originally painted with azurite blue, most famously in the ceiling of the Upper Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, where extensive areas of sky intended as deep blue now appear green. Conversely, malachite and azurite are so closely associated in nature that pure samples of either mineral are rare, and medieval painters working with one inevitably encountered traces of the other.
Azurite blue was gradually displaced by smalt and Prussian blue and finally cobalt pigments.
