


Lead-tin yellow is a synthetic lead stannate produced by heating mixtures of lead and tin oxides at 650-850°C. Two types exist: Type I (Pb₂SnO₄) was widely used from the 14th to mid-18th centuries; Type II (PbSn₁₋ₓSiₓO₃) appeared occasionally. Described by Cennini as “giallorino” and noted as both natural mineral and artificial product. The most important yellow in European Renaissance painting, it then disappeared from use around 1750. Its existence was forgotten until re-identified by Kühn in 1968 through scientific analysis of Old Master paintings. Produces warm, opaque yellows ranging from pale lemon to golden depending on firing temperature and composition. Stable in most conditions, including alkaline environments with a limited documented use in fresco, but incompatible with sulfur-containing pigments, forming black lead sulfide. Highly toxic.
