


Lead white stands among humanity’s most important inventions. Due to its exceptional qualities and versatility, it served as the only practical white pigment for over two millennia in all artistic techniques except fresco: every Renaissance oil painting, egg tempera, and manuscript illumination depended on it. In drawing it was often used as body color for highlights in the chiaroscuro drawing technique.
Historically produced by the Dutch stack process using earthenware pots with vinegar and lead strips, buried in fermenting manure or tan bark. Heat and CO₂ converted the metal into basic lead carbonate. Darkens with hydrogen sulfide (forms lead sulfide). In oil paint it speeds drying and creates strong films but may form lead soaps over time. Due to toxicity, it was replaced by modern whites in the 20th century.
