Red Lead Pigment (Minium)


Red lead, also known as minium, is a mixed-valence lead oxide produced by heating lead white or litharge (lead monoxide) in air at 450-500°C. Known since antiquity and described by Pliny, Vitruvius, and Theophilus. The name “minium” originally referred to cinnabar in classical texts, causing later confusion. Both cinnabar and red lead were widely used in medieval manuscripts (hence “miniature” and “miniare“) and panel painting. Darkens to brown or black in fresco through oxidation to lead dioxide (PbO₂), and can form black lead sulfide with sulfur-containing pigments. In oil painting, provides brilliant orange-red with good drying properties due to its siccative effect. Largely abandoned after the Renaissance due to instability. Extremely toxic.
