


Arzica, known in English as weld yellow lake, is an organic yellow pigment extracted from the dyer’s weed plant Reseda luteola (Italian: erba guada or gualda, French: gaude). The term arzica is primarily Tuscan: Cennini notes that this pigment was used “più in verso Firenze che in altro luogho” (more around Florence than elsewhere). Its etymology is debated. Some scholars derive it from Arabic zarqa (blue, clear, pale), a paradoxical origin for a yellow pigment. Others connect it to a corruption of arsenikon, the Greek word for orpiment, as Vitruvius writes: “auripigmentum quod arsenicon graece dicitur” (VII, 7). Le Begue incorrectly treated arzica and arzicon (orpiment) as synonymous, but the Bolognese Manuscript makes clear that the true medieval arzica was exclusively a yellow lake prepared from Reseda luteola, not a mineral pigment.
The principal colorant in weld is luteolin (C₁₅H₁₀O₆), a flavonoid compound present in all green parts of the plant, along with smaller amounts of apigenin and their glucosides. To make the lake pigment, the plant was chopped, boiled in water (or lye) to extract the dye, and the colored liquid was then precipitated onto an inert substrate with the addition of rock alum. The Bolognese Manuscript (Merrifield, recipe 194, “A fare l’arzica bona et bella”) gives a detailed recipe: a pound of chopped weld is boiled in water until reduced by half, then two ounces of finely ground travertine (or white lead) and half an ounce of rock alum are added gradually to the hot tincture. The precipitate is allowed to settle, dried first on a hollowed brick, then on a polished board. The anonymous De Arte Illuminandi (14th century, Naples) gives a parallel recipe using erba dei tintori (dyer’s weed), with lead white (cerussa) and rock alum, filtered through linen into an unglazed earthenware bowl and dried. Depending on the substrate and mordant, the resulting pigment ranges from a bright greenish-yellow to a warm golden tone.
As a textile dye, weld was one of the oldest and most important yellow colorants in Europe, documented from the 1st millennium BC and possibly earlier than either woad or madder. A 1243 Venetian statute mandated weld as the only permitted yellow dye for textiles, demonstrating its commercial dominance. Pegolotti’s Pratica della mercatura (14th century) lists arzicco as a traded commodity with its own tariff alongside madder. As a painters’ pigment, however, arzica was used primarily in manuscript illumination, where its transparency and luminosity were valued for imitating the appearance of gold, for modifying greens and reds, and for delicate glazing effects. Cennini lists it among his yellows but considers it a “lean” color of limited durability: beautiful but fugitive. For panel painting he assigns it a secondary role in mixtures, particularly for producing greens in combination with azurite and lead-tin yellow. Yellow lakes could also be combined with saffron and gum arabic to produce a rich golden wash for miniatures.
Weld remained the most widely used yellow dye in Europe until the 18th century, when it was displaced by quercitron (Quercus velutina), a North American oak bark dye of greater intensity. By the late 19th century both natural yellow dyes had been largely replaced by synthetic aniline dyes. As a fine art pigment, arzica was similarly superseded by more lightfast synthetic organic yellows. Weld lake is moderately lightfast for an organic pigment, better than many plant-derived yellows, but still fugitive compared to mineral pigments such as yellow ochre or lead-tin yellow. Today it is produced only in small quantities for historical reconstruction and specialist use. In English, weld lake was also known under the confusing name “Italian pink,” which despite its name refers to a yellow, not a pink pigment.
