


Woad (Isatis tinctoria) was the primary European source of blue dye and pigment throughout the medieval and Renaissance periods. Its leaves contain the same colorant as tropical indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), indigotin (C₁₆H₁₀N₂O₂), though in lower concentrations. European woad was processed by fermenting crushed leaves into balls, then extracting the blue colorant through further fermentation in alkaline solutions, often with urine and vinegar.
As with most organic colors, two distinct preparations existed for painters:
- The transparent juice, collected as froth from the dyer’s vat, was used directly for washes, glazes, and drawing.
- The lake pigment was produced by precipitating the woad froth onto a substrate of calcined eggshells, gesso, chalk, or marble dust, often with the addition of rock alum, as described in numerous recipes from the Bolognese Manuscript and other treatises collected by Merrifield. This gave the pigment more body and opacity, transforming the fugitive dye into a usable paint.
With the discovery of the Americas and the opening of trade routes to Asia, tropical Indigofera indigo gradually replaced European woad from the 16th century onward, offering a far more concentrated source of the same indigotin molecule. Synthetic indigo, chemically identical to natural indigotin, was first produced in the 1880s by Adolf von Baeyer. As an artists’ pigment, indigo was always of limited use due to its high transparency and poor lightfastness, though it found application in manuscript illumination, drawing on prepared papers, and as a component in mixed greens.
Beyond manuscript illumination, woad found significant use in the preparation of colored papers for drawing. Leonardo da Vinci famously prepared blue-tinted papers by coating them with woad-based washes, using these as a middle-tone ground for silverpoint and metalpoint drawing, a practice widely adopted by his students and followers. In Venice, woad was incorporated directly into the papermaking process to produce carta azzurra, a commercially manufactured blue paper. Artists including Dürer, Tintoretto, and Leonardo himself prized Venetian blue paper as a ready-made toned ground for chiaroscuro drawing with inks and chalks, where the blue surface served as the mid-tone, white highlights were added with lead white or chalk, and dark shadows with ink or black chalk.
